About Snežnik Regional Park

Snežnik Regional Park, established to protect the natural and cultural heritage surrounding Mount Snežnik, which at 1,796 meters is the highest non-Alpine peak in the region, covers a vast area of mostly forested highlands in southwestern Slovenia near the Croatian border. Its rugged karst landscape features deep valleys, clear streams, and rich beech and fir forests, making it a biodiversity hotspot that supports species such as brown bears, Eurasian lynx, wolves, and capercaillie. The park’s name derives from the Slovene word 'snežnik,' meaning 'snowy,' inspired by the often snow-capped summit. Visitors are drawn to the network of well-maintained trails leading through peaceful wilderness, ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife observation, as well as the historical Snežnik Castle, a 13th-century Renaissance castle near the village of Kozarišče. The park’s remote and tranquil atmosphere offers an authentic outdoor experience far from urban bustle. Seasonal variation shapes recreation, with summer and autumn popular for trekking and winter offering opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Visitor infrastructure includes marked routes, educational signage, and some accommodation in nearby villages, although camping inside the park is generally restricted to protect the fragile environment. Snežnik Regional Park serves as an important conservation area preserving the natural heritage of the Dinaric Alps' southern fringes and sustains traditional rural cultural landscapes.
